Dimitris Karvounis
 
 

Dimitris Karvounis was born in Tsaritsani. He came into contact with music for the first time, through the artistic movement (Choirs & Band), which had been developed in Elassona by Yiannis Tsanakas, with whom he continued his musical studies at the Municipal Conservatory of Larissa. His substantial study of choral music took place near the great Greek conductor Antonis Kontogeorgiou, with whom he attended courses and many Choir Conducting seminars. He also attended choral music seminars with Cr. Wagner, G. Bredolo and Salv. Papagalo, while in 1983 he attended the summer seminar at the Zoltan Kodaly Pedagogical Institute of Music, in Hungary.

From 1983 to 2014 he taught Music in Secondary Education, at the 6th High School of Larissa. Theory teacher at the Municipal Conservatory of Larissa from 1981 to 1995. In 1990 he taught music at the theater education seminar of Thessalian Theater. Regular partner of the Municipal Radio of Larisa, in the periods 1990 – 91 & 1993 – 94. From 1981 until today he directs the Children's Choir of the Municipal Conservatory of Larisa, while in the fall of 2002 he was entrusted with the direction of the Mixed Choir of the DOL by unanimous decision of the Board of Directors of USD From 1988 to 2006 he directed the Men's Choir of the Larissa Music Association and from 1993 to 1997 the Children's Choir of the Municipal Conservatory of Volos. In 1997 he founded, in collaboration with other musicians from Larisa, the Enodeia Music Ensemble, which he also directs until today. As a director of choirs, he has given over 450 concerts, in many cities in Greece, in the Athens Concert Hall and Herodeion, as well as in many cities abroad (Italy, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Cyprus, Sweden, Bulgaria, etc.) , presenting over 500 works of choral music, many of them in First performance or in First Greek presentation.

From 1985 to 2005 he collaborated with Mikis Theodorakis, participating in his concerts with the Children's Choir of the Greek Orthodox Church. He participated in the First performance, in all subsequent Greek presentations and in the record production of "Requiem", as well as in many of his concerts with the works "Axion esti" and "Spiritual Journey". In 1994, he presented the first performance and recording production of "40 Children's Songs" by Mikis Theodorakis, for which he did the choral processing and the orchestration after being commissioned by the composer. His work with the choral arrangement of "Children's songs" for children's choir and piano was published by the publishing house "Papagrigoriou - Nakas" in 1994, while the complete orchestration of "Children's songs" is also under publication by the German publishing house Schott. His work - a presentation on "Children's songs" was published in the magazine "Fonographos" of Tripoli in 1995, while on the same topic he was a speaker at the International Symposium for the 80th anniversary of our leading composer organized in Chania in the summer of 2005. His work on the life and work of Mikis Theodorakis was presented at a conference in Agios Nikolaos, Crete in 1995 and published in the magazine of Speech and Art "Elitrochos" of Patras in 1996.

He also collaborated with the composer Nikos Kypourgos, recording his music for Theater and Cinema, while he participated in many of his concerts, most notably those of the "Garden Theater" at the Athens Concert Hall, and at the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. As the director of the Male Choir of the MSL, collaborated in the presentation of the 13th Symphony of Dm. Schostakowitsch, with the State Orchestra of Thessaloniki at the Herodeion (1990), and with the State Orchestra of Athens at the Athens Concert Hall (1996). He also collaborated with Manos Hadjidaki, Stavros Xarhakos, Antonis Kontogeorgiou, Alki Baltas, Louka Karytinos, the "Manos Hadjidakis" Music Ensemble, the "Mikis Theodorakis" Folk Orchestra, the Volos Music Theater, the Kavala Music School, while his long collaboration with the Thessalian Theater and Kostas Tsianos was especially important.

In 2018, he performed a series of concerts with the Mixed Choir of DOL and Enodeia. In particular, a concert of Honor and memory for Panagiotis Papathanasiou (14/1, Mixed DOL), a concert with Piandemonium 920 and 21/1, Mixed DOL), a concert – rebetika songs (10/09, Mixed DOL – Enodeia), a tribute to Mikis Theodorakis "Axion esti" – Volos Symphony (16/09, Mixed DOL), All Greece for Mikis (19/09, Mixed DOL), participation in the concert of the Philharmonic of the DOL (23/10, Mixed DOL) and a tribute to Brecht – Vasilis Tenidis: The circle with the chalk (21/11, Mixed DOL - Enodeia).
